Synopsis
Tre (Daniel Cariga) shows up at 5 AM, hoping to crash
with his best friend, Gabe (Erik McDowel), and his best friend's girlfriend,
Kakela (Kimberly-Rose Wolter). He learns that Kakela's friend Nina (Alix
Koromzay) is staying in the guesthouse, so he takes up residence on
the couch. Nina and Gabe go to work each day leaving Kakela and Tre
alone at together. Though she is supported financially by her parents'
trust fund, Kakela works very hard during the day, hoping to become
a writer. Tre spends his waking hours watching television and trying
to get Kakela to hang out with him. Although Tre and Kakela seem to
have a rapport based on Tre's previous visits, Kakela no longer has
the time for Tre's brand of
irreverence and irresponsibility.
Tre and Nina begin sleeping together-- an arrangement
of convenience for both, as Nina wants to get back at her husband and
Tre wants access to the guesthouse, his accustomed abode. Kakela objects,
subtly at first, then openly, to the point that Gabe has to wonder why
it bothers her so much. Nina is forced to defend her choices and tensions
only increase. Just when things seem ready to explode, Gabe surprises
everyone by proposing marriage.
Kakela accepts.
Later that week, Kakela and Tre are on the way to the
supermarket when Kakela discovers a pair of panties in Tre's glove compartment.
Kakela is convinced the panties are hers, but Tre claims they belong
to Nina. Kakela goes to find Gabe at the ranch where he trains horses.
She is shocked to learn that Tre has already informed Gabe of the "the
panty scandal." Worse, Gabe takes Tre's side of the argument, telling
Kakela the panties belong to Nina. Kakela would like to send Tre packing,
but Gabe resists, saying he has nowhere to go. Kakela points out the
irony that Tre is actually the heir to a million dollar fortune. They
compromise, and Gabe agrees to have a talk with Tre. The two friends
hash it out while vegetating in front of the television. Tre agrees
to steer clear of Kakela
during the day when the others are gone.
The separate corners approach lasts for a short while,
but eventually, Kakela's need for company and her struggles with writer's
block prove more powerful than her aversion to Tre. One afternoon, Kakela
and Tre go on a long walk. Kakela confesses that she doubts her ability
as a writer. Tre makes fun of her, of course, but in his own way gives
her the encouragement she needs. Kakela then reveals that the true source
of her anguish is her sense that Gabe has abandoned her for his career
as a horse trainer.
That night, Tre is unusually cold to Nina, both during
sex and afterwards. Tre is back on the couch when Kakela comes downstairs,
unable to sleep. They decide to get high and hang out in the tree house
out back, where Tre confesses that he did indeed steal Kakela's panties,
and Kakela confesses that
she's uncertain if she wants to marry Gabe.
The next day, Nina and Tre accompany Kakela to watch
Gabe's horse riding competition. During a long, hot afternoon, Tre and
Nina have their final blow up and Nina decides to move out. Tre makes
a promise to Kakela not to mention her uncertainty about her upcoming
marriage to Gabe.
With Nina out of the way, Tre is able to take over the
guesthouse, and the three finally find the equilibrium they'd enjoyed
in the past. When Gabe comes home from work, he seems torn between spending
time with Kakela in the main house, and kicking
back with Tre in the guesthouse.
One night, Kakela decides to join Tre and Gabe in the
guest house. The three get stoned and watch TV. Gabe passes out and
Kakela and Tre start talking indirectly about the feelings they are
developing for one another. Tre suggests they go outside for some air,
and Kakela agrees. Once outside, Kakela challenges Tre to state his
intentions. Once he has spoken the unspeakable, Tre and Kakela decide
to make a deal, the result of which
will change their lives forever.
